The official name of the additive is Magnesium Oxide (magnesium oxide), also known under the European codification index E530. The chemical formula is MgO. In addition, this substance can be defined as part of various products under the name: burnt magnesia or magnesium oxide. It is obtained in laboratory conditions by firing dolomite and magnesite, which also contain magnesium oxide. It also occurs naturally in the mineral periclase - transparent crystals with a grayish-green tint.

Sometimes two forms of this substance: heavy and light magnesium oxide. Heavy is similar to a coarse powder with large crystals, it is used in construction, sports, and heavy industry. Lightweight magnesium oxide is used as an emulsifier and stabilizer in food production as well as in medicine, and is a loose, odorless white powder with a slightly earthy taste. The color of this substance is considered "reference" white, this property is due to the absolute reflectivity.

Burnt magnesia crystals do not dissolve in water and alcohol, well absorb fats and other liquids. It belongs to fireproof, melts at a temperature of 28,000 C, and boils at 36,000 C. Due to these properties, burnt magnesia is used as a refractory material in the oil refining industry and other industries. It forms salts when combined with acids, so it is also widely used in the chemical industry.

Application of MgO in industry

Due to its high melting point, magnesium oxide is used in construction. In this case, the so-called "caustic magnesite", which is obtained by roasting natural magnesite, is highly valued. It was especially widely used in the creation of building materials such as xylitol, cement, concrete. The chemical substance increases their fire resistance, so such materials are often used in the construction of industrial premises, residential and public.

MgO is also used to create binders. However, its ability to absorb moisture allows the use of such materials and mixtures only for the construction of premises with a predominantly dry operating mode. In the automotive industry, this chemical compound is introduced into rubber compounds, as well as for vulcanization as an activator of other accelerators.
